This page is based on a contribution from Magnus, with additional material from John Mc. Leod. Introduction. Gin Rummy is one of the most popular forms of rummy. The game is generally played by two players, each receiving ten cards. Here is an article by David Parlett on the History of Gin Rummy, which was originally published on the Game Account site. Note: I have been told that among some players the name Gin Rummy in fact refers to not to the game described below, but to the game which is called 5.

Cards in each suit rank, from low to high. Ace 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1. Jack Queen King. The cards have values as follows: Face cards (K,Q,J)1. Ace. 1 point. Number cards are worth their spot (index) value. The Deal. The first dealer is chosen randomly by drawing cards from the shuffled pack - the player who draws the lower card deals. Subsequently, the dealer is the loser of the previous hand (but see variations). In a serious game, both players should shuffle, the non- dealer shuffling last, and the non- dealer must then cut. Each player is dealt ten cards, one at a time. The twenty- first card is turned face up to start the discard pile and the remainder of the deck is placed face down beside it to form the stock. The players look at and sort their cards. Object of the Game. The object of the game is to collect a hand where most or all of the cards can be combined into sets and runs and the point value of the remaining unmatched cards is low. J. a set or group is three or four cards of the same rank, such as 7, 7, 7. A card can belong to only one combination at a time - you cannot use the same card as part of both a set of equal cards and a sequence of consecutive cards at the same time. For example if you have 7, 7,7, 8, 9 you can use. To form a set and a sequence you would need a sixth card - either a 7 or a. Note that in Gin Rummy the Ace is always low. A- 2- 3 is a valid sequence but A- K- Q is not. A normal turn consists of two parts. The Draw. You must begin by taking one card from either the top of the stock pile or the top card on the discard pile, and adding it to your hand. The discard pile is face up, so you can see in advance what you are getting. The stock is face down, so if you choose to draw from the stock you do not see the card until after you have committed yourself to take it. If you draw from the stock, you add the card to your hand without showing it to the other players. The Discard To complete your turn, one card must be discarded from your hand and placed on top of the discard pile face up. If you took the top card from the discard pile, you must discard a different card - taking the top discard and putting the same card back in the same turn is not permitted. It is however legal to discard a card that you took from the discard pile in an earlier turn. For the first turn of the hand, the draw is done in a special way. First, the person who did not deal chooses whether to take the turned up- card. If the non- dealer declines it, the dealer may take the card. If both players refuse the turned- up card, the non- dealer draws the top card from the stock pile. Whichever player took a card completes their turn by discarding and then it is the other player's turn to play. Knocking. You can end the play at your turn if, after drawing a card, you can form sufficient of your cards into valid combinations: sets and runs. This is done by discarding one card face down on the discard pile and exposing your whole hand, arranging it as far as possible into sets (groups of equal cards) and runs (sequences). Any remaining cards from your hand which are not part of a valid combination are called unmatched cards or deadwood. Ending the play in this way is known as knocking, presumably because it used to be signalled by the player knocking on the table, though nowadays it is usual just to discard face down. Knocking with no unmatched cards at all is called going gin, and earns a special bonus. Note. Although most hands that go gin have three combinations of 4, 3 and 3 cards, it is possible and perfectly legal to go gin with two 5- card sequences.)A player who can meet the requirement of not more than 1. A player is never forced to knock if able to, but may choose instead to carry on playing, to try to get a better score. The opponent of the player who knocked must spread their cards face- up, arranging them into sets and runs where possible. Provided that the knocker did not go gin, the opponent is also allowed to lay off any unmatched cards by using them to extend the sets and runs laid down by the knocker - by adding a fourth card of the same rank to a group of three, or further consecutive cards of the same suit to either end of a sequence. Note. Cards cannot be laid off on deadwood. For example if the knocker has a pair of twos as deadwood and the opponent has a third two, this cannot be laid off on the twos to make a set.)If a player goes gin, the opponent is not allowed to lay off any cards. Note that the knocker is never allowed to lay off cards on the opponent's sets or runs. The play also ends if the stock pile is reduced to two cards, and the player who took the third last card discards without knocking. In this case the hand is cancelled, there is no score, and the same dealer deals again. Some play that after the player who took the third last stock card discards, the other player can take this discard for the purpose of going gin or knocking after discarding a different card, but if the other player does neither of these the hand is cancelled. Each player counts the total value of their unmatched cards. If the knocker's count is lower, the knocker scores the difference between the two counts. If the knocker did not go gin, and the counts are equal, or the knocker's count is greater than that of the opponent, the knocker has been undercut. In this case the knocker's opponent scores the difference between the counts plus a 1. A player who goes gin scores a bonus 2. A player who goes gin can never be undercut. Even if the other player has no unmatched cards at all, the person going gin. The game continues with further deals until one player's cumulative score reaches. This player then receives an additional bonus of 1. If the loser failed to score anything at all during the game, then the winner's bonus is 2. In addition, each player adds a further 2. This is called the line bonus or box bonus. These additional points cannot be counted as part of the 1. After the bonuses have been added, the player with the lower score pays the player with the higher score an amount proportional to the difference between their scores. Variations. Many books give the rule that the winner of each hand deals the next. Some play that the turn to deal alternates. Some players begin the game differently: the non- dealer receives 1. The non- dealer's first turn is simply to discard a card, after which the dealer takes a normal turn, drawing the discard or from the stock, and play alternates as usual. Although the traditional rules prohibit a player from taking the previous player's discard and discarding the same card, it is hard to think of a situation where it would be advantageous to do this if it were allowed. The Gin Rummy Association Rules do explicitly allow this play, but the player who originally discarded the card is then not allowed to retake it unless knocking on that turn. The Game Colony Rules allow it in one specific situation - "action on the 5. When a player takes the third last card of the stock and discards without knocking, leaving two cards in the stock, the other player has one final chance to take the discard and knock. In this position, this same card can be discarded - if it does not improve his hand, the player simply turns it over on the pile to knock. Some people play that the bonus for going gin is 2. Some play that the bonus for an undercut, the bonus for going gin, and the box bonus for each game won are all 2. Some play that if the loser failed to score during the whole game, the winner's entire score is doubled (rather than just doubling the 1. A collection of variations submitted by readers can be found on the Gin Rummy Variations page. Oklahoma Gin. In this popular variation the value of the original face up card determines the maximum count of unmatched cards with which it is possible to knock. Pictures denote 1. So if a seven is turned up, in order to knock you must reduce your count to 7 or fewer. If the original face up card is a spade, the final score for that deal (including any undercut or gin bonus) is doubled. The target score for winning Oklahoma Gin is generally set at 1. Some play that if an ace is turned up you may only knock if you can go gin. Some play that a player who undercuts the knocker scores an extra box in addition to the undercut bonus. Also a player who goes gin scores two extra boxes. These extra boxes are recorded on the scorepad; they do not count towards winning the game, but at the end of the game they translate into 2. If the up- card was a spade, you get two extra boxes for an undercut and four extra boxes for going gin. Playing with 3 or 4 Players. When three people play gin rummy, the dealer deals to the other two players but does not take part in the play. The loser of each hand deals the next, which is therefore played between the winner and the dealer of the previous hand. Four people can play as two partnerships. In this case, each player in a team plays a separate game with one of the opposing pair. Players alternate opponents, but stay in the same teams. At the end of each hand, if both players on a team won, the team scores the total of their points. If one player from each team won, the team with the higher score scores the difference. The first team whose cumulative score reaches 1. Other Gin Rummy pages. PDF Compressor - Compress PDF. Version: 2. 7. 0. File size: 1. 4. 9. MBDate updated: 2/3/2. Rated 4. 9/5 based on 7. That's weird. I think of Super Mario 6. And now Mario 6. 4 is totally, undeniably, absolutely… not new. Man. By the time the Nintendo 6. I had decided to give up video games. ![]() Gotta grow up, be an adult, move along with my life — the usual. But then… then I saw the system in action. I played Mario 6. Toys R Us and knew then and there I needed to own the system. I was living on a monthly stipend of $5. I very irresponsibly took my first check and put half of it on an N6. Mario 6. 4 preorder. It was amazing. Then, six months later, I sold my system and games to a roommate and used the cash to buy a Play. Station. Calm down, calm down. Eventually, about a year after that, I replaced that N6. But I didn't regret the sacrifice; in the time I had initially owned an N6. I owned five games and enjoyed two.
One of those (Mario 6. Mario Kart 6. 4 was good fun for a few weeks. But must- have releases were few and far between, and the cost of those carts was enormous; Play. Station ended up having far more games I wanted to play, and I could own two PS1 games for the price of a single N6. It was nice to be able to own both (and a Saturn!) once I had more disposable income, but the hard choice I had to make between remaining faithful to my history of owning Nintendo consoles and actually owning the system where all the games I wanted to play were being released… well, that's something that's always stuck with me during my time as a professional reviewer. Sometimes console warriors have to make hard choices, and money matters when you don't have a lot of it The N6. Expensive and under- supported, but it made me a more considerate journalist. ![]() ![]() Has any other system ever featured so many medium- defining, must- own works while otherwise having such a sparse library? What an odd little moment in video game history that console represented. Bob Mackey, Senior Writer. We may make fun of how poorly the N6. Super Mario 6. 4 in motion was nothing less than a mind- melting experience for those of us who grew up alongside the medium. Seeing those conceivably rendered, cartoony characters bounce around the screen in 1. After this, nothing could possibly be the same again. True, 3. D games had existed long before the N6. Nintendo freed them of their former awkwardness by showing that polygonal worlds could be perfectly manageable outside of the first- person context. It's a shame, then, that Nintendo refused to budge from their pro- cartridge standpoint as late as 1. While this format meant N6. Play. Station fans—it also meant Nintendo would keep making money hand over fist by continuing to control the production of cartridges. This amounted to a losing prospect for developers as well as consumers: Not only could the games not be nearly as ambitious as those found on CD- ROM- based platforms, they also would have to cost a lot more to account for their physical parts and Nintendo's cut of the production. I distinctly remember going with a friend to pick up a copy of Mortal Kombat Trilogy in late 1. In the end, the N6. D, just as Nintendo had done in 2. D with the NES a little over a decade earlier. With such sheer talent from Nintendo's developers on display, you have to wonder how much better the system would have fared if their hands weren't tied by a sub- standard format. Up until the system’s debut, we could more or less count on a single console to give us a complete gaming experience. Sure, the Sega Genesis didn’t have Mario, and the Super Nintendo didn’t have Sonic. But you could depend on a pretty consistent style of game between the consoles, namely 2. D platformers and sprite- based RPGs with squishy heroes and top- down overworld maps. The N6. 4 changed that. If you wanted 3. D action games — to say nothing of 3. D games based around Nintendo’s franchises — you had to get an N6. The Play. Station had 3. D games, of course, and Tomb Raider was no slouch. But the N6. 4 really committed itself to the format through Super Mario 6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Turok, Banjo- Kazooie, and more. On the other hand, if you wanted RPGs — and I did, oh did I ever — you had to get a Play. Station. A Play. Station was also necessary for classic sprite- based 2. D platformers like Mega Man 8 and Mega Man X4. The pastime of gaming was well and truly divided. It was an interesting time, but it was also kind of heartbreaking if you’d committed yourself to a single system most of your life. Obviously, the solution to enjoying the 3. Buy both the N6. 4 and the Play. Station.” Easy to grasp, right? Sure. But trying to convince your parents you need both of the hottest game systems is something else…Jaz Rignall, Editor- at- Large. Despite it being a cartridge- based system, and not one of those exciting, new- fangled CD- ROM machines, I had no qualms about buying an N6. I loved my Play. Station, but wanted Nintendo's latest console just so I could play Super Mario 6. What blew me away was the game's incredible design, and the way it cleverly used the N6. At a time when 3. D platformers were very much a new thing, Super Mario 6. It was intuitive and easy to pick up and play, and the way the camera worked was quite the revelation. Sure, it took a little while to get used to the then- alien concept of swinging the viewpoint around, but once you were up to speed, it became second nature. Ultimately, the game was absolutely brilliant, and finding all its secrets provided me with many, many hours of entertainment - a very good thing considering that high- quality N6. I actually didn't end up buying a huge amount of games for my N6. The reason for that was because its cartridges were really expensive, and I couldn't afford to throw away my money on mediocre titles. Fortunately, though, the N6. I enjoyed the best of the best - many of which were Rare- developed titles, like Golden. Eye, Blast Corps, Perfect Dark, and Donkey Kong 6. I also really liked Wave Race 6. I personally found very entertaining, and, of course, Ocarina of Time, which is one of my all- time faves. I think that's the reason why I still have very fond memories for the N6. To be honest, I spent most of my time gaming on a Play. Station during this period, but every so often a new N6. I'd really enjoy playing, so all my memories of the system are really positive. I don't think I bought a bad game for my N6. Mike Williams, Associate Editor. The Nintendo 6. 4 was a weird system. Other than the Game. Cube, I don't think I've ever seen a system with as odd a controller. The mighty claw worked great for games like Mario 6. I've never had to struggle with a fighting games as much as I did with Killer Instinct. It's one of those things where I've always wondered how that was the final product for a general game console. I can't even imagine how it worked if you were left- handed. Graphically, N6. 4 games didn't age well either. A side effect of the Nintendo 6. RAM was every game had issues with limited space for textures, leading to a generally blurry look for most games. Nintendo was deft in working around it, but many third- party titles just looked bad on the system. Nintendo ultimately made the RAM cartridge, but it was a peripheral, so support wasn't as widespread as it could be. Despite these issues, I look back on the N6. Super Mario 6. 4 is amazing and Mario Kart 6. Golden. Eye 0. 07 is one of the games that brought the first- person shooter to consoles. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a huge jump for the series and it's impressive at how well Nintendo pulled that off. F- Zero X, Perfect Dark, Blast Corps, Wave Race 6. Turok, Super Smash Bros, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Banjo and Kazooie; the system was graced with some excellent titles. It was the beginning of the end for Nintendo third- party support with the rise of the Play. Station, but I'll be damned if the system didn't have a great run. TEKTON 2. 84. 1 1.
